“Why Don’t Big-Budget Films Feature Actors Like Irrfan Khan and Om Puri?” – Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Renowned Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui recently opened up in an interview with Pinkvilla, sharing his candid views on the state of the film industry. One of the most powerful questions he raised was: “Why have big-budget films never been made with brilliant actors like Irrfan Khan and Om Puri in lead roles?”
Siddiqui, who is now also stepping into the role of a film producer, expressed concern about how Indian cinema continues to underutilize many talented character artists. “We often trap actors into a fixed mold,” he said, “but a truly skilled actor can perform any kind of role.”
He cited Rajpal Yadav as an example, saying that while he’s been typecast as a comic actor, he is perfectly capable of delivering intense and serious performances. “It’s our failure as an industry that we can’t see actors beyond the image we’ve assigned them,” Nawaz added.
Speaking further, Nawaz praised legendary actors like Irrfan Khan and Om Puri, stating that they were some of the finest talents the country has ever seen. However, he expressed disappointment that despite their immense talent, they were never cast as leads in big-budget mainstream films. “It’s a huge regret for Bollywood. I still don’t understand why this happened,” he said.
A Journey Rooted in Passion, Not Stardom
Nawazuddin, known for his natural and powerful acting, received his training at the prestigious National School of Drama (NSD). Coming from a humble, farming background in western Uttar Pradesh, Nawaz struggled for years in Mumbai before finding recognition. However, he insists he never considered that struggle a burden.
“I don’t regret those days. I came from a simple family. No one forced me to pursue acting — I had an inner itch for it. That was my drive, and that’s why I never viewed my struggle as a negative experience.”
Nawaz also revealed that he never aspired to become a mainstream ‘hero.’ He simply wanted to act — whether it was on the street or in a theater. “I never planned to reach a certain level or become a great actor. I just wanted to enjoy acting.”

A Natural Performer from Childhood
He recalled his childhood days in his village where he would act like a blind or stammering person in the marketplace, and people believed it was real. “That’s when I knew I could be a good actor — when I could make people believe.”
Speaking about his relationship with his father, Nawaz admitted that they weren’t particularly close. Still, after his father’s passing, he bought back several plots of land that his father had lost over the years.
A Legacy of Authentic Cinema
Today, Nawazuddin Siddiqui is celebrated for his performances in critically acclaimed films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Kick, and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. His recent film, “Costo”, was released on Zee5.
As he ventures into film production, Nawaz continues to advocate for the recognition and support of real acting talent in Indian cinema — reminding the industry that genuine performance must be valued just as much as star power.
