Suniel Shetty, who famously played Shyam in the Hera Pheri franchise, recently visited the Lallantop newsroom. While speaking with the team, he shared an important update regarding Hera Pheri 3. Suniel revealed that he had heard about Paresh Rawal leaving the film and admitted that the news left him deeply saddened.
When asked who could potentially replace Paresh Rawal in the film, Suniel Shetty firmly responded that no one could take his place. “In Hera Pheri, replacing Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, or Paresh Rawal in their roles is simply not possible. No one can portray Babu Bhaiya the way Paresh does,” he said.
An Emotional Journey Through Life and Career
During the interview, Suniel Shetty also opened up about his personal life, career, and upbringing. Talking about his family background, Suniel became emotional as he recalled the sacrifices and values instilled in him by his father. He said his father, a South Indian, had come to Mumbai at a very young age. At just 9 years old, he started working in a hotel, washing dishes.
Over time, through hard work and determination, his father was able to start his own restaurant business, which later became the family trade. Suniel also balanced his education while helping run the hotel. At a young age, he began learning martial arts and had a strong passion for cricket. He was an excellent all-rounder and particularly good at fielding. Suniel shared many such little-known facts during the interview.
Before his official debut in Balwaan, he had started working on a film called Aarzoo, which was 90% completed but never released. Another project he began also remained unfinished. It was with Balwaan that he finally made his entry into the film industry.

On Love, Family, and Fatherhood
Suniel also shared the story of his marriage to Mana Qadri, describing it as a love marriage. Initially, his family opposed the relationship since Mana came from a reputed architect’s family. However, after a strong friendship and relationship, they eventually got married and have two children—Athiya Shetty and Ahan Shetty.
Athiya is now married to Indian cricketer K.L. Rahul. Recalling her wedding, Suniel said, “I didn’t cry much during her bidaai because I knew she was going to a safe and happy home. Rahul is a wonderful life partner.”
The Origin of ‘Anna’
Talking about his nickname “Anna,” Suniel revealed that it was Sanjay Dutt who gave him the name. One of Sanjay’s assistants called Suniel “Anna” a couple of times, and Sanjay picked it up and started calling him that on set. Eventually, even Amitabh Bachchan popularized the name across the industry.
Roles, Regrets, and Iconic Films
Suniel has portrayed iconic villain roles in Dhadkan and Main Hoon Na, both of which were box office hits. Interestingly, he initially declined Border because he had heard that director J.P. Dutta was very strict. This made him nervous, but he eventually accepted the role.
He also shared behind-the-scenes stories from Hera Pheri, praising director Priyadarshan’s unique style of filmmaking. “As soon as Priyadarshan arrived on set, he would mess up our costumes to give us a more realistic look,” Suniel recalled with a smile. He revealed that the entire film was shot in Chennai.
Suniel Shetty was recently seen in the film Kesari Veer.
