Vivek Agnihotri on Working with John Abraham: “He’s Not a Top Actor, Doesn’t Deserve a Crore-Worthy Fee”

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri recently opened up about his experience working with actor John Abraham during the making of Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal. In a candid interview with Dainik Bhaskar, Agnihotri shared why he felt John wasn’t the right fit for the project and criticized the industry’s star-driven system.

Vivek revealed that he was never in favor of casting John in the film. It was producer Anurag who insisted on John for the lead role. Agnihotri believes that one of the reasons the film failed was also due to the real-life breakup between John Abraham and co-star Bipasha Basu, which created challenges on set and affected the film’s overall vibe.

Goal had the potential to be a good film. The songs were hits, but the production process was chaotic. At that time, John and Bipasha had broken up, and managing everything on set became extremely difficult,” he said.

Without directly naming John, Agnihotri criticized the industry’s obsession with star power. He claimed the decision to cast John was based more on appearance than acting ability.

“Everyone thought John looked like a footballer, so he should play one. But the film’s tone was mature, and it required a certain intellect to perform. For John’s scenes, we had to shoot his legs and face separately, while actors like Arshad Warsi and Raj Zutshi completed their scenes in one go,” Vivek explained.

He also added that despite the film’s music becoming popular, the film itself flopped due to multiple reasons including weak dialogue and poor scripting. He had to bring in a new writer to fix the script and even then, there were issues.

“John struggled to deliver even a five-line dialogue. Yet, producers are willing to pay him crores. They need to rethink these decisions,” he remarked.

Vivek further shared that even though he was the film’s director, John would only discuss script issues with Anurag Kashyap. “The UTV executives would also consult only Anurag on every major problem. It felt like I wasn’t the director,” he said.
