The much-awaited Rajinikanth starrer Coolie is set to make a grand entrance this August. The film’s trailer will be released on August 2, followed by a direct theatrical release on August 14. This update was officially shared by the film’s director Lokesh Kanagaraj in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Lokesh Kanagaraj Shares Behind-the-Scenes Experience

Lokesh revealed that he has been deeply involved in the making of Coolie for nearly two years, including a 36-hour non-stop editing session toward the end. After completing the film, he said he finally felt a sense of relief.

Talking about working with a superstar like Rajinikanth, Lokesh said, “It comes with a lot of pressure. When you’re working with a megastar like him, you have to give it your absolute best.”

Single Trailer Strategy for Maximum Impact

Unlike the usual teaser-then-trailer rollout, Lokesh has chosen a different approach for Coolie. “We’re skipping teasers. Just one trailer and then straight to release,” he said. The decision is to avoid spoiling the excitement among fans by overexposing the content beforehand. The official trailer drops on August 2, followed by the film’s theatrical release on August 14.

Mega-Budget, Star-Studded Film

Coolie is a mega-budget action drama with an estimated budget of around ₹400 crore. Alongside Rajinikanth, the film features a powerful ensemble cast including: Nagarjuna, Aamir Khan, Sathyaraj, Upendra Rao, Shruti Haasan, Shoubin Shahir, Pooja Hegde

Lokesh shared his excitement about working with such a talented cast and revealed interesting behind-the-scenes details.

Convincing the Stars

Lokesh said convincing Rajinikanth was surprisingly easy. “He immediately said yes after I narrated the story.” However, getting Nagarjuna onboard was a bit more challenging. In Coolie, Nagarjuna plays a brutal villain, which marks the first negative role of his career.

Rajinikanth Completes 50 Years in Cinema

This year marks 50 years of Rajinikanth in Indian cinema. He began his career in 1975 and continues to hold massive star power to this day. Lokesh mentioned that writing for Rajinikanth gives him a lot of creative freedom. “You can write anything for him, and the audience accepts it,” he said.

Audience Anticipation and OTT Buzz

Coolie has already generated tremendous buzz even before its release. The film’s OTT and satellite rights have been sold at record prices, indicating high market anticipation. With its star power, massive budget, and compelling storyline, Coolie is expected to break major box office records upon release.
