Released on 12 saptembar 2025, Dashavatar is a Marathi-language thriller directed by Subodh Khanolkar and produced by Ocean Film Company in association with Ocean Art House.

The film stars veteran actor Dilip Prabhavalkar in the lead role, supported by an ensemble cast that includes Siddharth Menon, Mahesh Manjrekar, Abhinay Berde, Priyadarshini Indalkar, and several other well-known Marathi actors

What’s the Story?

Set in the Konkan region, Dashavatar revolves around the traditional folk art form of the same name.
The story follows Babuli Mistry, an elderly performer who is deeply passionate about the ancient Dashavatar art form. Despite his age and health concerns, Babuli refuses to retire. His son Madhav (played by Siddharth Menon) and a local doctor repeatedly ask him to stop performing due to his declining health.

Eventually, Babuli agrees to stop, on one condition — that he will retire once Madhav secures a job. That moment arrives, and Babuli announces that his performance on Mahashivratri will be his last. On the same day, Madhav plans to propose to his girlfriend Vandana (Priyadarshini Indalkar). However, an unexpected incident turns everything upside down, setting off a thrilling chain of events.

What begins as a cultural tribute to traditional art slowly transforms into a suspenseful thriller, incorporating crime, mystery, and emotional depth. The story intensifies as police investigations and complex character arcs come into play.

A Film Winning Audience Hearts

Dashavatar has won over audiences with its strong storytelling, powerful performances, and direction. Viewers are flocking to theatres, and trade analysts expect the film’s earnings to grow steadily in the coming days.

    Dashavatar: The Storyline
Dashavatar is a cult-changing Marathi movie exploring the life of Babuli Mestri (Dilip Prabhavalkar), a veteran performer from a hamlet of Dongarpada nestling amidst the lush green Sahyadri mountain ranges of Konkan. Babuli is fighting two battles at a time; one against the ripening age and seeking justice for his mysteriously passed away son, Madhav (Siddharth Menon). Labelled to be suicide, Babuli & his son’s beloved, Vandana (Priyadarshani Indalkar) join forces to find the truth while their secret mission is backed by Rakshaka, the locally believed supernatural power and Bhagavan Vishnu himself.
    Review
With appropriate support of Siddharth & Priyadarshani, the performance of Dilip Prabhavalkar steals the show. Other characters like Mahesh Manjarekar, taking entry as an inspector Michael D’costa after the interval, Sunil Tawde (as Police Patil Tawde) & Ravi Kale (as Sarpanch – Tandel) and Bharat Jadhav (as Wadekar, a forest ranger) add up to the acting strength bring that also brings comic relief. Devendra Golatkar’s cinematography makes its own mark whenever he turns his camera. Though the songs are limited ‘Rangpooja’ in Bhairavi mood by Ajay Gogavale and ‘Rutuchakra’ by a debut singer, Swanandi Sardesai at the tunes of A.V. Prafullachandra, who has also given the background score making the folkloric story musically mesmerizing.
While impressed by the performance of the major role of Babuli played by Dilip Prabhavalkar, there are some places which it couldn’t overshadow. The portrayal of the protagonist character Babuli brings out dignity to folk art and belief in the almighty’s omnipresence. A strong message is successfully delivered underlining environmental degradation, corrupt power, and cultural ideas against modern development. We can also ignore the slow moving first half but keep expecting more incarnations of Bhagavan Vishnu.
In its scope, the movie succeeds in imprinting importance of folk art and preserving the nature’s riches. An analogy between stage-performances and real-life conflicts is worth watching.
Though the movie doesn’t bring out a new story line, the story-telling is very much new for Marathi cinema. Watching it in a theatre on a silver screen with flashy sounds mesmerizes the audiences to far extent successfully.
My rating for the movie is 3.5/5.
