Neeraj Ghaywan’s critically acclaimed film ‘Homebound’ has been officially selected as India’s entry for the Oscars 2026 in the Best International Feature Film category. The film, which has already left a strong impression at various international film festivals, is now set to compete on the world’s most prestigious cinematic stage — the Academy Awards.

Chosen From Among 24 Indian Films

According to N. Chandra, chairman of the selection committee, ‘Homebound’ was chosen from a pool of 24 films in different Indian languages. He mentioned that the selection process was extremely challenging, but after in-depth discussions, the committee unanimously agreed on this film. The panel consisted of 12 experts including directors, writers, editors, producers, and film journalists.

9-Minute Standing Ovation at TIFF

‘Homebound’ has already garnered global attention at several international film festivals. Notably, at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the film received a 9-minute standing ovation after its premiere. The movie was featured in the ‘International Choice’ category and came second in the audience voting, narrowly missing the top spot.

Both come from underprivileged and lower-caste backgrounds, hoping that their uniform will bring them respect in society. Their journey, however, is filled with political and social obstacles that reflect the harsh realities of today’s world.

The film boldly addresses caste-based discrimination, social injustice, and political interference, offering a powerful and thought-provoking narrative. Having previously been screened only at film festivals, ‘Homebound’ is now set for theatrical release on 26th September.
