Film producer Namit Malhotra has once again asserted that Ramayana should not be categorized as mythology. Speaking about his upcoming magnum opus based on the epic, he emphasized that the Ramayana represents India’s history and cultural heritage, not a myth.
Malhotra has repeatedly shared the vision behind his ambitious cinematic adaptation in various podcasts and television interviews. In a recent interaction, he firmly stated, “Ramayana is not mythology; it is our history. Please do not call it a myth.” He described it as one of the world’s oldest and richest civilizations, deserving of global recognition and respect.
Addressing Global Perceptions of India

On February 13, Malhotra attended the Global Business Summit organized by The Economic Times, where discussions around the Ramayana film once again took center stage.
During the on-stage conversation, he highlighted his personal journey of working in the United States over the past two decades. He noted that while Indians have excelled across various fields internationally, there remains limited awareness in Hollywood and the West about India’s historical and cultural depth.
According to Malhotra, many people abroad still perceive India through the lens of films like Slumdog Millionaire. He expressed discomfort with this narrow representation and said it motivated him to present a project that truly reflects India’s identity, culture, and historical richness. “We want to create something that the world will remember permanently,” he added.
A No-Compromise Vision with a Massive Budget
Speaking about the scale of the production, Malhotra said the film will match Hollywood standards in both technology and budget. The estimated budget stands at approximately ₹4,000 crore, though he admitted that the final figure could go even higher.
“We will not compromise on any aspect of making Ramayana,” he said. “We want every Indian, wherever they are in the world, to feel proud after watching it. If someone wants to understand India, they should watch Ramayana.”
