Aamir Khan Expresses Concern Over Lack of Theatres in India at WAVES Summit: Only 2% of Indians Watch Films in Cinemas
At the WAVES summit organized by the Indian government on the topic of entertainment, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan joined a special panel discussion. Alongside him were film producers Dinesh Vijan, Ritesh Sidhwani, and Namit Malhotra—prominent business figures from the Indian film industry. During the session, Aamir shared valuable insights and also raised concerns about some key issues that need attention. Let’s take a closer look at what he had to say.
Aamir Khan on the Shortage of Cinema Screens in India
Aamir expressed serious concern about the low number of cinema theatres in India. Referring to audience attendance data, he pointed out that only a very small percentage of the Indian population actually visits theatres to watch films. According to Aamir, considering India’s vast population and geographical size, the number of theatres is alarmingly low.
He cited that India has around 10,000 cinema screens, which is insufficient. He compared this to the United States, which has roughly one-third of India’s population but has over 40,000 screens. He also mentioned that China has an even greater number—around 90,000 screens.
Aamir further explained that out of India’s 10,000 screens, about 5,000 are located in South India, meaning only 5,000 screens are available for Hindi cinema. This imbalance limits the reach of Bollywood films.

Only 3 Crore People Watch a “Hit” Film in Theatres
Backing his argument with more statistics, Aamir pointed out that even the biggest hit films in India only attract around 3 crore viewers in theatres. That’s just about 2–3% of the Indian population. He said this is quite low for a country often referred to as “cinema-loving.”

Flawed Business Models in the Film Industry
Aamir also raised concerns about flawed business strategies in the film industry. He highlighted the need for better distribution models and infrastructure to grow the theatrical market.
His Suggestions for Improvement
To address this, Aamir suggested expanding cinema infrastructure in rural India, where many regions still lack access to theatres. He also advised against the early release of films on OTT platforms, emphasizing the need to give theatrical releases a longer run.
