Neither director has delivered a flop to date—only back-to-back successes.
Now, both of these industry giants have announced films on the same subject. Post-Dunki, Hirani is reportedly casting Aamir Khan in his version of the biopic, while Rajamouli is set to cast Jr. NTR. According to recent reports, Dadasaheb Phalke’s family is backing Rajkumar Hirani’s project.
Dadasaheb Phalke’s grandson, Chandrashekhar Krishnan, stated that Rajamouli and his team never reached out to the family. In contrast, Hirani’s team has been in touch with them for several years, gathering detailed insights into Phalke’s life to ensure authenticity.
Chandrashekhar added that he believes Aamir Khan would be more suitable for the role than Jr. NTR. In an interview with Amar Ujala, he expressed disappointment that Rajamouli’s team never contacted him or his family before announcing the film. “If someone wants to make a film on Dadasaheb Phalke, they must connect with the family. Without our input, how will they get the complete story?” he said.

Meanwhile, he praised Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir Khan, saying they have earned the family’s trust. He specifically mentioned Hindukush Bhardwaj, an assistant from Hirani’s team, who has been in contact with them for the past three years and conducted extensive research. “They’ve asked me a lot of questions and shown great dedication. I’m confident they will create an excellent biopic,” Chandrashekhar concluded.
