Music composer A. R. Rahman has spoken about the immense responsibility and pressure that comes with composing music for a prestigious and large-scale project like Ramayana.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana is an upcoming ambitious film starring Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role, alongside Yash and Sai Pallavi. The film also features several prominent actors in supporting roles. One of the most distinctive aspects of the project is its music, which is being jointly composed by two legendary musicians—A. R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer.
Rahman acknowledged that composing music for a film based on an epic like Ramayana is a huge responsibility. The lyrics for the film are being written by renowned poet Kumar Vishwas. Despite both Rahman and Zimmer being Academy Award–winning composers, Rahman admitted that working on a culturally and historically significant story like Ramayana brings with it a sense of fear and pressure.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rahman said,
“Composing music for a project as revered and globally known as Ramayana is extremely intimidating. This is a story that every Indian already knows.”
The audience has already had a glimpse of the film’s music through the first teaser, which sparked widespread discussion, especially about the background score. Speaking about the teaser’s music, Rahman explained, “Hans Zimmer created a sound framework for the teaser, after which I added Sanskrit shlokas and other Indian musical elements. The most challenging part is working on a story that is deeply familiar to everyone.”
He further added, “We are presenting this story from India to a global audience in a new way. Working with Hans Zimmer has pushed me to move beyond traditional methods, and it has also changed my perspective on Ramayana, which has greatly helped in composing the music.”

According to Rahman, the music of Ramayana aims to preserve the essence of Indian culture, and both composers are enjoying the creative process. Earlier, lyricist Kumar Vishwas had also shared his experience of writing songs for the film, revealing that he became emotional while writing a song for the exile (Vanvaas) sequence.
Reports suggest that the music of Ramayana will be unlike typical Indian film soundtracks. It will primarily feature bhajans and Sanskrit shlokas, and the same music will be used across all language versions of the film without dubbing.
