‘Coolie’ Makers Blame Madras High Court for Declining Box Office Collections – What Really Happened?
according to the http://www.pinkvilla.com
The Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie is currently facing a sharp decline in box office performance. Interestingly, the filmmakers are now holding the Madras High Court responsible for the film’s falling earnings. Let’s take a closer look at what exactly is going on.
Strong Opening Followed by Sudden Drop
Coolie, a high-budget film, opened to a fantastic start at the box office. In its first few days, it recorded impressive earnings — ₹65 crore on Day 1, followed by ₹54 crore, ₹39 crore, and ₹35 crore over the next three days.
However, the trend changed from Day 5 onward. The collections started to dip significantly:
- Day 5: ₹12 crore
- Day 6: ₹9.5 crore
- Day 7: ₹6.59 crore
Despite initial expectations that Coolie would become the biggest hit of Rajinikanth’s career, the box office performance suggests otherwise.
Why the Makers Blame the Censor Board and Court
According to the film’s producers, one of the main reasons for the sudden drop in earnings is the ‘A’ certificate (Adults Only) issued by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). They argue that had the film received a ‘UA’ certificate (Parental Guidance), families — including those with children — could have watched it together. However, due to the ‘A’ rating, many families reportedly canceled their movie plans.
This, the makers claim, had a direct impact on the film’s commercial performance.
Petition Filed Against the ‘A’ Certificate
The Censor Board stated that Coolie was granted an ‘A’ certificate due to excessive violent content. In response, on August 19, production house San Pictures filed a petition in the Madras High Court, challenging the decision.
San Pictures argued that action sequences in Coolie were similar to those seen in K.G.F and Beast — both of which were awarded ‘UA’ certificates despite having similar violence levels.

Government’s Argument and the Ongoing Legal Dispute
In court, government lawyers countered by saying that San Pictures had been advised to make specific cuts to qualify for a UA rating. However, the production house refused to implement those cuts and opted to proceed with an A certificate instead.
Now, as the film’s collections continue to decline, the production team appears to be rethinking its position and taking steps to challenge the decision.
Total Box Office So Far
Despite the challenges, Coolie has managed to earn a total domestic collection of ₹223 crore in its first seven days.
