Dhanush’s latest film Kubera has hit the theatres and is already making waves at the box office, earning ₹38 crore in just two days, according to Sacnilk. But what’s drawing even more attention is the incredible dedication Dhanush showed to prepare for his role—as a beggar.

A Role That Demanded Total Transformation

Dhanush is receiving immense praise for his powerful performance and realistic portrayal of a beggar in Kubera. The character posed a significant challenge for the actor, but he fully embraced it. In fact, his transformation was so authentic that he appeared indistinguishable from a real beggar on screen.

Dhanush Actually Begged on the Streets for the Role

At a pre-release event in Hyderabad, Dhanush revealed that he didn’t just wear ragged clothes and grow a beard for the look—he also spent several days begging on the streets of Tirupati. This was part of his deep preparation to completely immerse himself in the role.

“I said yes to this film immediately because I had full faith in the director’s vision and reputation,” Dhanush said.
“But I didn’t expect that I’d actually have to beg on the streets! Still, I trusted my director completely.”

This film marks Dhanush’s 51st Tamil film and his second Telugu film after Vaathi (Sir). Director Sekhar Kammula had narrated the Kubera script to Dhanush even before Sir was released.

Shot Around Garbage for Realism

Dhanush also mentioned shooting for several days around garbage trucks and waste piles to fully embody the hardships of his character.

“Sekhar sir is brilliant,” he said.
“He taught me every detail with such precision. This was a very unique role for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing it.”

Box Office and Censorship Buzz

Directed by Sekhar Kammula, Kubera features a strong ensemble cast including Rashmika Mandanna, Nagarjuna, and Jim Sarbh. Before release, the film received 19 censor cuts, amounting to 13 minutes and 41 seconds of removed footage. Despite this, it released on June 20 and quickly garnered box office success.
