Sriram Raghavan said that while writing the script of Badlapur, he initially had the late Irrfan Khan in mind for the lead role. “When I was developing the story, I visualized Irrfan playing the central character. He was such a serious and versatile actor, and I wrote the part with him in mind,” said Raghavan.

However, producer Dinesh Vijan advised Raghavan to consider casting a younger actor to appeal to a wider audience. Taking this suggestion, Raghavan narrated the script to Varun Dhawan, who was instantly drawn to the story. Varun loved the concept and agreed to do the film without hesitation.

Released in 2015, Badlapur was a gripping crime thriller directed by Sriram Raghavan. The film featured Varun Dhawan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Yami Gautam, and Huma Qureshi in key roles. It turned out to be a box-office hit and marked a turning point in Varun Dhawan’s career, showcasing his versatility as an actor in darker, more complex roles.
