Recently, Nitesh Tiwari, the director of Dangal, shared his journey of transitioning from IIT to the film industry in a Game Changer podcast with Komal Nahata. The highly educated director talked about the challenges he faced when he decided to leave his stable job and enter a completely different field. Let’s take a look at what happened when he made this life-changing decision and how his family reacted.
In this Game Changer podcast, many top directors, including Raju Hirani and Sooraj Barjatya, have appeared, but in this episode, Nitesh Tiwari, the director of the highest-grossing Indian film Dangal, shared insights into his educational background and his decision to pursue a career in direction.
Nitesh Tiwari was a highly educated, well-paid engineer who completed his degree from IIT. However, after completing his degree, he developed an interest in writing. While completing his degree, he engaged in extracurricular activities, including playwriting. After finishing his degree, he worked in a well-paying job at a large company.
However, he left that job to prove himself in writing and took a big break. When his father found out about his unusual decision, he was very upset. Nitesh earned very little money in his new writing job, and he mentions that people generally move upwards in life, but he went from a high position to a much lower one. His father remained upset with him for a long time due to this decision.
Eventually, Nitesh Tiwari stuck to his decision, and gradually, his life in writing became more stable. After some time, he entered the world of advertising and started directing. He shared a story about his first film, Chillar Party, where he and his friend wrote the script during their weekends. However, when they approached several directors, no one was willing to take up the project.
Later, his friend convinced him to co-direct Chillar Party, and that’s where his journey as a director began. Afterward, he went on to direct major films like Dangal, Chhichhore, and Bawal. His film Dangal set a major record, becoming the highest-grossing film in India, grossing over ₹2000 crores worldwide.
