Recently, the renowned Bollywood director Ram Gopal Varma appeared on Komal Nahata’s Game Changing podcast. During the interview, he shared insights into his filmmaking style and told stories behind many of his iconic films. Ram Gopal Varma has given Bollywood numerous hit films, and his diverse filmmaking style has allowed him to work across all genres. Let’s take a look at what he had to say on this special topic.

Originally from Tamil cinema, Ram Gopal Varma had completed his studies in civil engineering. However, he shared that he was never interested in his degree. “I used to watch three films a day during my college years, so I completely neglected my studies. That’s when I decided I wanted to pursue a career in filmmaking,” he said.

He started his career with the Tamil film Shiva and did not assist other filmmakers before making it. He claims that he learned a lot just by watching films. After making a few films in Tamil, he went on to create some of the biggest cult classic films in Bollywood, including Satya, Rangeela, Company, Sarkar, and Bhoot—films from every possible genre. When Komal Nahata asked him why he chose to work in such diverse genres, including gangster, musical love stories, horror, and political dramas, Ram Gopal Varma replied:

“I have watched many films in theaters. I have always been passionate about watching movies since childhood, and I enjoyed watching films of every genre—be it horror, crime thrillers, romantic love stories, or comedies. I wanted to make films across all genres in my own filmmaking style,” he explained.

Ram also shared some fun behind-the-scenes stories and logic behind many of his films. He says, “Often, I paid more attention to certain scenes than to the script itself. Keeping important reference points in mind, we sometimes started films with certain scenes already in place, and some scenes were written later.” He added, “When the audience watches a film, they go to enjoy it. Often, no one pays much attention to the logic in films. I have often made films while keeping logic aside, and no one has ever objected to it.”

Ram Gopal Varma also opened up about his filmmaking journey. Not only is he a director, but he is also a producer and has produced several films throughout his career.
