Bhandarkar comes from a modest middle-class family. He candidly shared, “I wasn’t very good at academics, but I was always fascinated by cinema. Right from my childhood, I used to watch films not just for entertainment, but to understand the details—like the title sequences, the way scenes were shot, and the storytelling style. While others would forget a film after watching it, many of those scenes stayed with me. I used to think about them for days.”
It didn’t take him long to realize that filmmaking was his calling. However, he had no formal training or technical background in cinema. “I wasn’t highly educated either, which often made me feel I was lacking in many ways,” he admitted. Living in Khar, he developed a passion for observing film shoots in his locality, and he closely watched the filming of many big productions.
When he first told his family and friends that he wanted to become a filmmaker, many laughed at him. But gradually, he began working as an assistant director. Madhur mentioned that he assisted Ram Gopal Varma during the making of Rangeela. After gaining some experience, he decided to venture out and make his own film.

His contributions to Indian cinema have been recognized with five National Awards and the prestigious Padma Shri.
