Anurag Kashyap Opens Up About His Unique Journey in Bollywood
Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently shared in an exclusive interview that even though he has never delivered a major blockbuster, he continues to get film offers regularly. He also explained the various reasons behind this consistent demand for his work.
A Distinctive and Experimental Filmmaker
Anurag Kashyap is widely known as one of Bollywood’s most unconventional and experimental filmmakers. His filmography features offbeat, realistic, and socially reflective stories. Although his films may not always have mass appeal, they often leave a deep impact on audiences.
In his candid conversation with Komal Nahta, Kashyap discussed his unique filmmaking style and the philosophy behind his creative choices.
“My Filmmaking Style Is Different”
Anurag said, “My filmmaking style is a bit different. I don’t like spending a lot of money on films. Most of my movies are made on a very low budget. Over my 32-year career, I’ve learned how to create quality cinema with minimal resources.”
He further added, “I made only one big-budget film — Bombay Velvet. But it didn’t do well at the box office. That experience taught me that a big budget doesn’t guarantee success. Since then, I’ve chosen to work on smaller projects with emerging actors.”
Why He Avoids Working with Big Stars
Explaining why he prefers not to work with big-name actors, Anurag said, “When you work with major stars, there’s immense pressure on the filmmaker. You have to spend more according to their comfort, which inflates the budget and increases stress. That’s why I prefer working with smaller actors — it allows more creative freedom.”
Low-Budget Filmmaking Philosophy
Anurag elaborated, “Most of my films are made with very limited budgets. Instead of building elaborate sets, I use real locations as my sets. Often, we shoot with hidden cameras to capture authenticity. With smaller actors, it’s easier to shoot anywhere without the need for lavish facilities.”
This unconventional approach, he says, is exactly why he keeps getting offers to direct more films. “I’ve made several low-budget movies — some were hits, others semi-hits — but all of them have managed to stay profitable,” he shared.

Anurag Kashyap’s impressive filmography includes Gangs of Wasseypur, Dev D, Black Friday, Mukkabaaz, Ugly, and Manmarziyaan, among others. His films consistently explore unique, thought-provoking subjects and have redefined the language of Indian cinema.
