Imtiaz Ali was recently interviewed on Komal Nahta’s podcast Game Changer. Bollywood has seen many legendary directors, each with a unique style of filmmaking. One such name is Imtiaz Ali. For the past two decades, Imtiaz has been making films in his own distinctive style. He has given Bollywood cult classics like Love Aaj Kal, Jab We Met, Rockstar, Tamasha, and more recently Chamkaela. Each of these films tells a unique story inspired by the world around him.
In every film, Imtiaz Ali presents a philosophy of life. His characters often find themselves in complex situations that can sometimes feel overwhelming to the audience. As a result, some of his films have not always been commercially successful. Tamasha is one such example. In response to this, Imtiaz explained that his natural storytelling process is intricate, and sometimes his films don’t achieve box-office success.
While discussing Highway, Imtiaz shared the challenges of making a film with minimal resources. Highway had a simple narrative with limited locations and a storyline focused on two characters traveling together. Despite having a limited budget and fewer resources, the film became a hit at the box office.
In Jab We Met, he was inspired by the character of Geet, played by Kareena Kapoor, and in Love Aaj Kal, the interactions between the younger and older versions of the characters influenced him. Each of his stories is inspired by different experiences and inspirations. Imtiaz also shared interesting details about his film Rockstar, which featured music by A.R. Rahman.
For every film, Imtiaz has worked with lyricist Irshad Kamil, who wrote the songs for his films. His last film, Chamkaela, featured Parineeti Chopra and Diljit Dosanjh. Both stars performed several stage performances that were shot directly for the film. The film’s unique requirements led to the casting of Diljit Dosanjh, who brought a special touch to the film.
