The cult classic Sholay is set to be re-released in theaters. The trailer for the re-release has just been unveiled, and writer Javed Akhtar has expressed his displeasure over certain altered dialogues in it.
50 Years of Sholay: Special Re-Release
Released in 1975, Sholay is one of Bollywood’s most iconic and evergreen films. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the film, prompting the announcement of a special re-release.
The re-release will be presented under the title ‘Sholay: The Final Cut’. However, the trailer shows some changes and updates, sparking discussions among audiences and the film’s creators.
Controversy Over Changed Dialogue
In the re-release trailer, a dialogue originally referencing ‘James Bond’ has been altered to ‘Tatya Tope’.
Javed Akhtar expressed his concern over this change, stating that Sholay is an evergreen hit and a cornerstone of Indian cinema. According to him, the dialogues of such classic films are ingrained in audiences’ memory, and therefore, should never be altered or modified.
Audience Reaction and Re-Release Features
While some viewers were unhappy with the changed dialogue, the trailer’s action sequences and 4K Dolby sound promise a unique viewing experience for Sholay: The Final Cut.
The re-release will also include several previously unseen scenes. Notably, a famous sequence that was censored in 1975 – in which Thakur kills Gabbar – will now be shown in its entirety.
