Veteran actor Pankaj Kapur recently gave an exclusive interview to Lallantop Cinema, where he opened up about his son, actor Shahid Kapoor, and shared his thoughts on Shahid’s evolution as an actor, especially his portrayal of complex and grey characters.

Pankaj Kapur, one of Indian cinema’s finest actors, is also the father of Bollywood star Shahid Kapoor. In his interview, he spoke about his relationship with his son and expressed his views on Shahid’s performances in films such as Haider, Farzi, and Kabir Singh.
Shahid Kapoor began his career with the film Ishq Vishk. In the early phase of his journey, he mostly portrayed the “chocolate boy” image through films like Ishq Vishk and Dil Vil Pyar Vyar. His romantic hero image continued with blockbusters like Vivah, which strengthened his standing as a lover boy in Bollywood.

Speaking about his son’s artistic growth, Pankaj Kapur said,
“Shahid started his career doing lover-boy and sweet-boy roles. But I always knew he had a lot of drama within him. Unfortunately, no filmmaker recognized it early. It was only with Haider that director Vishal Bhardwaj brought out that intensity in him and made full use of his potential.”
He further added that Shahid expanded his acting range over the years by taking up challenging grey-shaded roles in projects like Farzi and Kabir Singh, which helped him evolve into a more versatile performer.
Reaction to Kabir Singh
Kabir Singh faced heavy criticism upon its release for its bold themes and controversial lead character. When asked about the film and the reactions it received, Pankaj Kapur said,
“Shahid delivered a brilliant performance in Kabir Singh. He has evolved tremendously as an actor. People may criticize the character, but such individuals do exist in society. His portrayal was honest and powerful.”

Talking about his relationship with his children, Pankaj Kapur shared,
“My relationship with my kids is very normal. I don’t give them acting advice. I once told Shahid, ‘Create your own place in the industry,’ and he did exactly that. I knew from his debut that he would become an excellent actor, though I never told him that directly.”
