Three major films — Retro, Hit 3, and Red 2 — were released on May 1, coinciding with Labour Day, a national holiday in India. As expected, all three films recorded strong box office openings on Day 1. Over the following 10 days, each continued to perform well, inching closer to hit status. Let’s take a closer look at how each film performed.

Red 2 Leads the Race with the Highest Collection

All three films, despite releasing on the same day, managed to draw massive crowds to theatres. Among them, Retro, starring Suriya, was an original film, while Hit 3 and Red 2 were part of existing franchises.

On opening day:

Retro earned a solid ₹19 crore.

Hit 3, a Tamil-language action sequel, collected ₹21 crore.

Red 2, the sequel to the successful Red, earned ₹19 crore as well.

Over 11 days:

Red 2 emerged as the top performer, grossing ₹120 crore.

Hit 3 followed with ₹72 crore.

Retro collected a respectable ₹57 crore.

While Retro and Hit 3 saw strong collections in their respective regional markets, Red 2 performed exceptionally well in the Hindi belt, giving it a nationwide edge.

About the Films

Red 2, directed by Raj Kumar Gupta, continues the story of an honest income tax officer taking on a corrupt politician. This time, officer Amay Pathak goes up against a new villain, Dada Bhai. The film blends action, suspense, and drama, creating a gripping experience for the audience.

Hit 3, part of the Nani-starrer HIT franchise, is a Tamil crime thriller with a short-tempered cop at its center. Directed by Sailesh Kolanu, the film is packed with high-octane action and intense emotional drama.

Retro marks Suriya’s return to the big screen in a dual role with an engaging action-thriller storyline. Actress Pooja Hegde stars opposite him. The film explores two different phases of the character’s life, making it a refreshing original amidst sequels.
