Renowned producer Siddharth Roy Kapur recently shared his candid views on star power and its relevance in today’s cinema. Appearing as a special guest on Komal Nahta’s show Producer Podcast, Kapur spoke in detail about his filmmaking style, the movies he has produced, and the evolving trends in the Bollywood industry.
“If the Content Is Powerful, the Audience Accepts It — Even Without a Star”
During the interview, Komal Nahta asked Siddharth Roy Kapur about the high fees demanded by top stars, which often inflate a film’s budget. Should actors lower their remuneration in such cases?
Responding to the question, Siddharth Roy Kapur said:
“Yes, stars do charge a hefty fee, but more importantly, filmmakers should focus on creating content that doesn’t depend on a star. If the story, presentation, and emotional depth are strong, the film will work on its own.”
He further cited examples to support his point:
“This year, films like Saiyara, Chhava, and Kantara were all big hits. None of them featured any major star, yet the audience responded tremendously. That proves when content is good, star power becomes secondary.”
“Today’s Audience Is Mature and Open to Experimentation”
Kapur also emphasized that today’s viewers are far more open-minded and appreciative of good storytelling.
“If you tell an honest, passionate story, audiences will embrace it wholeheartedly. This has been proven time and again. Filmmakers and producers must prioritize content instead of depending solely on stars.”
Family Background and Career
During the podcast, Siddharth Roy Kapur also spoke about his family’s connection with cinema. His grandfather migrated from Lahore to Mumbai in the 1940s and began producing films during that era.
Today, Siddharth Roy Kapur is one of the most successful producers in the Hindi film industry. Many of his productions have given Bollywood a refreshing creative direction. His notable content-driven films include Kai Po Che, The Sky Is Pink, Pihu, Haider, Kaminey, and Paan Singh Tomar.
He is married to acclaimed actress Vidya Balan, and together, they are regarded as one of the most creative and influential couples in the Indian film fraternity.
