Who Was Vidyut Jiva?
According to Valmiki’s Ramayana, Vidyut Jiva was the husband of Shurpanakha, Ravan’s sister. While Shurpanakha belonged to the demon (rakshasa) clan, Vidyut Jiva came from the asura (demon lord) lineage and served as the commander of the Kalkeya demons. Ravan had opposed their marriage, leading to deep conflict between the two. The mythology mentions a fierce battle between Ravan and Vidyut Jiva.
Because of this, Shurpanakha blamed Ravan for her misfortune and, in ancient texts, is said to have cursed him:
“Because of me, your downfall will begin.”
