Renowned composer A. R. Rahman recently composed the music for the blockbuster film Chhava. In addition, he has also been entrusted with composing the music for the grand and ambitious project Ramayana. In a special interview, Rahman openly shared his experiences of working on both films.

Usually known for being soft-spoken, A. R. Rahman spoke candidly in this interview about the music of Chhava, which has emerged as a major hit, as well as about his upcoming large-scale project Ramayana. Last year, Rahman composed the music for Chhava, starring Vicky Kaushal in the lead role.

Chhava’s Success and the Controversy Surrounding It

Chhava turned out to be a massive box-office success. The film is a historical drama that depicts the conflict between the Maratha and Mughal empires. However, the film also faced criticism, with some alleging that it attempted to divide people along religious lines.

When asked about these allegations in a special interview, Rahman responded thoughtfully.

“The Film Does Divide, But Its Intention Is to Show Bravery”

Speaking to BBC Asian, Rahman stated,
“The film does divide people, I agree. But the intention behind it is to portray bravery.”

He further observed that the film industry is becoming increasingly polarized. Because of this, he tries to avoid projects that intentionally aim to divide society.

Why Rahman Chose Chhava

Sharing his thoughts specifically on Chhava, Rahman said,
“Yes, Chhava is a divisive film, in my opinion. But its core purpose was to depict the courage of a warrior. I had asked director Laxman Utekar why he felt I was the right person for this project. He simply said, ‘I want only you.’”

Rahman added that the film contains many layers and has a powerful ending. He believes that audiences are far more mature and capable of discerning truth from falsehood than they are often given credit for.

Pride in Composing Music for a Film on Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj

Rahman expressed immense pride in composing the music for Chhava, as the film is based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

“Chhava is an extremely popular character. Every Maratha considers him to be part of their bloodline,” Rahman said.
He also highlighted an emotional moment at the end of the film, where a young girl recites a beautiful poem about the Maharaj.
“That moment is deeply moving. I feel great pride in composing music for a film that carries the soul and heartbeat of every Maratha,” he added.

Rahman on Discrimination in the Film Industry

During the interview, Rahman was also asked whether he had ever faced discrimination in the film industry. He replied that he had never personally felt it.

“Perhaps God has shielded me from such experiences,” he said. As a result, he has not directly faced discrimination. However, he did acknowledge that compared to earlier years, the volume of work he receives has reduced.
