Bollywood director Sajid Khan recently appeared on Bharti and Haarsh Limbachiyaa’s podcast for an in-depth interview. During the conversation, he spoke about how being raised in a film-centric environment since childhood deeply influenced his life. He also shared a moment from his early years when he asked his father about his true religion, and his father told him, “Cinema is your religion.”

Sajid Khan has directed several Bollywood films like Heyy Babyy, Housefull, and Humshakals. He has also hosted multiple television shows. In this interview, Sajid talked about how growing up surrounded by people from the film industry shaped his passion for cinema. His father was once a successful film producer.

However, due to the unpredictable nature of the film business, his father suffered major financial losses. Although they owned four flats at one time, they had to sell three of them due to the losses incurred in film production. Eventually, the family’s condition worsened to the point where they had to live in a chawl (a modest housing complex). Sajid also revealed that his parents got divorced when he was still a child because his father had developed a serious drinking problem.

His maternal aunts were none other than renowned Bollywood personalities Honey Irani and Daisy Irani. Honey Irani later married legendary Bollywood writer Javed Akhtar, while Daisy Irani had a long career as an actress and was married to veteran actor K.K. Shukla. After his parents’ divorce, both Sajid Khan and his sister, Farah Khan, began living with their aunts.

Interestingly, his aunts were Parsi, one of his uncles had converted to Islam, his grandmother (his mother’s mother) had converted to Christianity, and his aunt’s husband (K.K. Shukla) was a devout Hindu Brahmin. So, as a child, Sajid was raised in a household that included people from multiple religions. At the age of just seven, this exposure led to a lot of confusion for him regarding his own religious identity.

In the interview, Sajid also shared his vast knowledge of cinema, clearing up several misconceptions. He explained the differences between filmmaking then and now and offered valuable insights into the business and art of filmmaking.
