Aamir Khan Admits Overconfidence and Oversight

Renowned actor and filmmaker Aamir Khan recently revealed in an interview that while working on “Laal Singh Chaddha”, he was overconfident, which led him to overlook several key aspects as a producer. As a result, the film’s budget escalated significantly, and ultimately, it turned out to be a box office failure.

Producer’s Perspective on the ‘Game Changer’ Podcast

In a candid conversation on Komal Nahta’s podcast ‘Game Changer’, Aamir appeared not as a superstar but as a dedicated producer. During the discussion, he elaborated on how he selects films, what criteria he follows, and how he approaches filmmaking from a producer’s point of view.

“I Choose Stories That Excite Me, Not Based on Business Potential”

Aamir shared, “As a producer, I don’t initially focus on how commercially successful a film might be. My priority is whether the story excites me emotionally and creatively. Because at the end of the day, I’m also a part of the audience.”

If a story touches him deeply and feels compelling, that’s when he decides to take it forward and turn it into a film. His focus is always on crafting a meaningful and well-made film, not just chasing commercial success.

The Importance of a ‘Filter’ While Producing

Even though emotional connection drives his choice, Aamir explained that he still applies a practical filter as a producer. He believes that a film’s budget should align with its realistic earning potential — at the very least, it should recover costs and ideally earn a modest profit.

This practical approach helps in controlling budgets and ensuring that the film doesn’t end up as a financial failure, even if it doesn’t become a blockbuster.

Laal Singh Chaddha – An Exception to the Rule

However, “Laal Singh Chaddha” was an exception. Aamir admitted that he didn’t apply his usual filters during its production. The project began with a budget of around ₹125 crore, but by the time it was completed, the budget had ballooned to approximately ₹200 crore.

He said, “I was overconfident. I believed it would definitely work because my previous films had been successful. So, I ignored the red flags. Unfortunately, it didn’t perform well at the box office, and I suffered major losses as a producer.”
