In a surprising revelation, Bollywood actor Aamir Khan recently disclosed that he was the original choice for Ashutosh Gowariker’s cult classic Swades, a role that eventually went to Shah Rukh Khan and became one of the most memorable performances of his career.
During a promotional interview for his upcoming film Sitare Zameen Par, Aamir shared that after working with Ashutosh Gowariker on the iconic Lagaan, the director had approached him with an early idea for a film titled Kaveri Amma, which later evolved into Swades. At the time, both Aamir and Ashutosh had even agreed to collaborate on the project after completing Lagaan.
However, things took a different turn. Aamir explained, “Ashutosh narrated the full three-hour script to me, and honestly, I found it very boring. While the basic idea had potential and I liked the theme, the final narration didn’t excite me enough to go ahead with it.” This led Aamir to step away from the film, and the role was later offered to Shah Rukh Khan.

Swades, released in 2004, is now regarded as a cult classic. Shah Rukh Khan’s portrayal of Mohan Bhargava, an NRI scientist returning to his roots in India, was highly acclaimed and remains one of his most loved performances.
The film is also a part of a long list of Bollywood movies that were first offered to other actors before landing in the hands of the ones who made them iconic. In this case, while Aamir passed on the film, Shah Rukh embraced the role and helped turn Swades into a cinematic gem.
As for Aamir, he is currently busy promoting Sitare Zameen Par, which is expected to hit theatres soon.
