Renowned Bollywood producer Karan Johar recently gave a candid interview on Raj Shamani’s podcast, where he spoke openly about his personal journey beyond the glitz and glamour of the film industry. In a refreshingly honest conversation, Johar discussed his personal identity, childhood struggles, views on online trolling, and his stance on nepotism in Bollywood.

Karan Johar Opens Up About Trolling and Childhood Bullying

Karan revealed that he has been mocked since childhood for his voice and the way he walked.

“I was always a little different. I walked differently, spoke differently, and people often perceived femininity in my body language. I was bullied for this. My parents never pointed it out or made me feel uncomfortable about it, but outside my home, I had to face a lot of taunts,” he shared.

Johar, known for producing iconic romantic films and being the face behind Dharma Productions, has often been trolled online for launching star kids and being labeled the “flagbearer of nepotism.” But in this interview, he firmly responded to that narrative.

“I Always Launch At Least One Outsider Every Year” – Karan’s Response to Nepotism Allegations
Karan addressed the nepotism debate with clarity:

“People say I only promote insiders, but they don’t know the full story. I make sure to give at least one outsider a chance every year. Last year, I introduced Lakshya Lalwani in Kill, and he’s a complete outsider. No one talks about this. Negative news spreads fast, but positive efforts are often ignored.”

He added that many directors and actors who had no background in films got their first big break through Dharma Productions. The Struggles Behind Dharma Productions’ Success, Touching upon his early days, Karan shared how Dharma Productions was on the verge of shutting down after a series of flops under his father Yash Johar.

“People don’t know this, but before I took over, Dharma had multiple back-to-back flops. We were deep in debt. If Kuch Kuch Hota Hai hadn’t worked, we would’ve had to sell our house. Nothing came easy to me—I worked hard to reach where I am. So being called a product of privilege is unfair,” he said.

Support from Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra

Johar also credited Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra for supporting him in the early days of his career.”Aditya Chopra believed in me and gave me the confidence to direct. I assisted him before I made my own film. Shah Rukh Khan trusted me with my first project as a director. Without them, I wouldn’t be here today.”Throughout the interview, Karan remained vulnerable yet strong, tackling difficult questions with grace and honesty.
