The much-anticipated romantic drama Abheer Gulal, starring Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor, has finally been released internationally. However, due to the involvement of Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, the film has not been released in India. The focus is now on the film’s box office performance abroad.
Released globally on August 29, 2025, Abheer Gulal primarily targets audiences of Indian origin living abroad, as well as select international markets.
Originally scheduled to hit Indian theatres in May 2025, the film’s domestic release was called off following growing opposition in India. The presence of Pakistani actor Fawad Khan in a lead role led to a ban on the film’s release in the country.
Following the Pahalgam terror attack, there was a widespread public demand in India to ban Pakistani actors from working in the Indian film industry and to stop the release of films featuring them. Taking into account the sentiments of the Indian audience, the makers decided to skip the Indian release entirely and focus solely on overseas markets.
This isn’t the first time a film featuring a Pakistani actor has faced such a situation. Earlier, Diljit Dosanjh’s Sardar 3 was released only internationally due to the presence of Pakistani actress Hania Aamir—and the film had a strong performance overseas. Similarly, producers of Abheer Gulal are now closely monitoring the international box office numbers.

What Is Abheer Gulal About?
The film tells the story of two emotionally wounded individuals who meet by chance. In each other’s company, they find comfort and slowly build a strong emotional bond that eventually turns into love. Set in London, the narrative follows their journey of healing from past traumas and moving forward toward a new life.
Abheer Gulal is directed by Aarti S. Bagdi, and produced by Vivek Agrawal, Avantika Hari, Rakesh Sippy, and Firuzi Khan. It remains to be seen how well the film performs at the international box office.
