Neil Nitin Mukesh, known for his impactful performances in films like Johnny Gaddaar and New York, recently opened up about being trolled for his fair complexion. In a candid conversation on a podcast, he spoke about the bias he has faced over the years due to his skin tone.

Neil has worked with several top filmmakers in Bollywood. Though he has stepped back from mainstream cinema in recent years, he continues to take on selective projects. Most recently, he appeared in a negative role in the Zee5 film Hisaab Barabar. During the podcast, Neil reflected on his current struggles in the industry and the challenges he has faced due to his appearance.

Rejected for Being “Too Fair”

There was a time when Neil Nitin Mukesh was actively seen in many Bollywood films. Today, however, he admits that getting quality roles has become more difficult. One of the reasons, he says, is his very fair skin tone, which often becomes a barrier in landing roles representing the “common Indian man.”

Neil revealed that casting directors have repeatedly told him that he looks “too fair” to convincingly play relatable Indian characters. “Many believe I don’t look like a typical Indian, so they hesitate to cast me in such roles,” he said. However, Neil believes that an actor’s performance should matter more than appearance. “Instead of judging by skin tone, people should focus on the acting,” he added.

Childhood Trolls and Identity Struggles

Neil also shared that this bias and trolling began during his school days. “Back then, I was often teased for my complexion. Many would say I looked like a foreigner and not Indian,” he recalled. “But the truth is, I may be fair-skinned, but I’m 100% desi by heart.”

He went on to talk about how the Bollywood landscape has changed. “There’s so much competition now. Filmmakers have endless options, which makes the struggle for actors even harder,” Neil said.

Support from Top Directors

Despite the challenges, Neil remains grateful for the opportunities he’s had. He expressed appreciation for filmmakers like Sriram Raghavan, Kabir Khan, and Vishal Bhardwaj, saying, “These directors never saw my complexion as a problem.”

Apart from acting, Neil Nitin Mukesh has also ventured into film production. He produced a film titled Bypass and has a few upcoming projects lined up, both as an actor and a producer.
