Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi’s Bhool Chuk Maaf Set to Break OTT’s Biggest and Most Crucial Rule

Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi’s upcoming film Bhool Chuk Maaf has been in the news for quite some time. After Operation Sindoora, the makers had initially decided to skip the theatrical release and premiere it directly on OTT. However, recent developments indicate that the film will now hit theatres first. Let’s take a closer look at what happened.

PVR and INOX had reportedly filed a ₹60 crore lawsuit against production house Maddock Films for opting to release the film directly on OTT instead of theatres. As a result of the legal battle, Maddock Films has now agreed to release Bhool Chuk Maaf in cinemas on May 23.

The twist, however, is that the film is set to release on an OTT platform just two weeks after its theatrical release — a move that violates the standard OTT-window rule. Traditionally, a film should premiere on OTT platforms eight weeks after its theatrical release, but Bhool Chuk Maaf will become the first film to be available on OTT just two weeks post its cinema debut.

Originally, the film was supposed to release on May 9 across theatres nationwide. After Operation Sindoora, the makers had pivoted toward a direct-to-OTT release plan. However, due to opposition from multiplex giants PVR and INOX — who claimed financial losses on promotions and other aspects — both parties eventually reached a mutual agreement to go for a theatrical release first.

According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, “When Dinesh Vijan (producer) was taken to court by PVR and INOX, it seemed like he would have to settle out of court. But that didn’t happen. Vijan was ready to fight the case until the end. He had demanded a simultaneous OTT and theatrical release, but when that wasn’t agreed upon, a compromise was reached.”

This move could set a new precedent in the industry. If successful, it might encourage more producers to experiment with similar release strategies.
