Released on May 1st, Raid 2 has crossed ₹130 crores at the Indian box office in just 15 days. Much like the first installment that released in 2018, this action-crime drama has received tremendous love from the audience and has achieved impressive numbers at the box office. Behind the success of this medium-budget film, not only Ajay Devgn but also director Raj Kumar Gupta and the film’s villain, Riteish Deshmukh, shared in an interview with Galatta India what they believe contributed to the film’s success.
The director of Raid, Raj Kumar Gupta, helmed both installments of the film. When asked why there was such a long gap between the first and second parts, Gupta explained that there was initially no intention to make a sequel when the first film was released. But after the success of the original, they started exploring what direction the character could take next. However, the sequel got delayed primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he noted.
In Raid 2, Riteish Deshmukh plays the antagonist, ‘Uttam Dada Bhai’. Praising Riteish’s performance, the interviewer mentioned that he effortlessly adapts to any role he’s given. When asked how he does it, Riteish replied, “I debuted in 2003, but for the first eight years, I mostly did comedy roles. Whenever I took on serious roles, the films didn’t do well, but the comedies were hits.”
When asked whether comedy is more difficult than serious roles, Riteish explained that the credit for a hit performance goes not just to the actor but equally to the writer and the director. “If the scenes are written well, it becomes much easier for us actors,” he said, giving due credit to the writers and directors behind his performances—whether comedic or serious.’
In his early career, Riteish starred in many hit comedies like Masti, Dhamaal, Malamaal Weekly, Apna Sapna Money Money, and Housefull. He mentioned that the first person to believe in his ability to handle a serious role was Ram Gopal Varma. After that, he started receiving more serious roles, and with films like Ek Villain and Lai Bhaari, he eventually earned the title of a “complete actor.”
Riteish, Ajay Devgn, and Raj Kumar Gupta’s excellent on-screen and behind-the-scenes chemistry is being credited as a major reason for the film’s success. With Raid 2 performing well at the box office, a third installment of the film may also be in the works.
