Renowned filmmaker Karan Johar recently sold a 50% stake in his production house, Dharma Productions, to the Poonawalla Group. In an exclusive interview with film critic Komal Nahta, Karan opened up about the real reason behind this major business move — not just technical, but also deeply personal and strategic.

A Major Deal in Bollywood

Two months ago, a significant development shook the Bollywood industry — Karan Johar sold 50% of Dharma Productions, one of the most prestigious production companies in the country.

This stake was purchased by business tycoon Adar Poonawalla for a whopping ₹1,000 crore. With this deal, Poonawalla now owns half of Dharma Productions, marking a new chapter in the company’s journey.

The news surprised fans and industry insiders alike, given Dharma’s legacy of producing blockbuster films over the past two decades.

Karan Johar Explains the Real Reason

While Karan had initially shared some technical justifications, he recently shared the emotional and business-driven motivations in a candid conversation with Komal Nahta.

When Komal asked, “You are the owner of one of Bollywood’s biggest production brands — why did you decide to sell 50% of it? Were you in financial need?”
Karan replied:

“People think Dharma is a very old production house, but in reality, it’s only in the past 15 years that we’ve truly been active in the production business. Earlier, Dharma was just making my own films. We only started producing outside projects in 2008.”

A Strategic Partnership to Realize Bigger Dreams

Karan further explained:

“Making films requires large-scale funding. Often, we used to collaborate with studios and then share profits. But in this model, there were many things I couldn’t do — like setting up my own distribution arm, expanding production, or making diverse types of films.”

“We were thinking about this shift for a long time. But I needed the right partner. And finally, we found that in Adar Poonawalla.”

A New Direction for Dharma Productions

Karan Johar is now focused on taking Dharma into new creative territories. Over the past year, Dharma has worked on films like Kill, Dhadak 2, and Homebound — all belonging to different genres.

Traditionally known for romantic dramas and family entertainers, Dharma Productions is now branching out into science fiction, action, thrillers, and more. A prime example is Brahmāstra, a big-budget, VFX-heavy sci-fi film.

Karan Johar’s decision to sell 50% of Dharma Productions is not merely financial — it reflects a long-term vision. With this strategic partnership, he aims to expand his production capabilities, explore varied genres, and gain independence in distribution.
